Perhaps it’s the impending doom we all feel, but horror movies remain as popular of an American pastime as ever with Halloween approaching. From streaming services curating horror classics like “The Silence of the Lambs” to silver screen offerings like “Smile” and “Barbarian” (which takes place in Detroit, Michigan), there’s certainly no shortage of blood and depravity to look for this month.

But who stands on top as the Great Lakes State’s bloodiest baddie might be a question that’s on many Michiganders’ minds this midterm season. It’s even turned into a question that a recent poll sought out to answer, revealing that Jason Voorhees, the hockey masked killer of “Friday the 13th” fame, haunts the minds of residents in the state the most.

Horror movie icons that won out in other states include Patrick Bateman, from “American Psycho” and Candyman from the “Candyman” series. States in the Midwest region tended to favor Jason Voorhees, while California and Texas lived in fear of Chucky.
